Silhouette Graphics

In this gallery is a selection of amazing Silhouette Graphics, cut from paper by Karl Frohlich from his book Frohliches ABC-Buch, published in Munich in 1859. In the book, he illustrates the German alphabet and adds little rhymes for each letter. I selected these ten oval portraits from the book. They depict lovely houses and boats along the river, people gleefully crushing grapes, a zebra standing in the jungle, and one of my favorites, a boy releasing birds from a basket as their unwitting owner pays for them.
