In this gallery are fourteen fantastic illustrations of a variety of Large Dogs. There are examples of St. Bernards, Mastiffs, Newfoundlands, and others. They come from the book History and Description of Dog Breeds, edited and illustrated by Ludwig Beckmann between 1894 and 1895. Large dog breeds are typically defined by a weight threshold starting between 50 and 70 pounds, often standing 24 inches or taller at the shoulder. Beyond physical size, the classification accounts for physiological characteristics such as a slower, longer growth phase compared to smaller breeds, reaching full maturity around 18 to 24 months.
