U.S. Flags Pictures
In this gallery is a collection of twelve U.S. Flags Pictures adapted from historic sheet music, posters, and menu covers. The history of the United States flag is a journey of evolution, reflecting the growth of the nation from thirteen colonies to fifty states. Its design has changed twenty-six times since its inception. As Vermont and Kentucky joined the Union, the flag was changed in 1795 to include fifteen stars and fifteen stripes. This specific version inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” after he witnessed it flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Realizing that adding a new stripe for every state would eventually make the flag look cluttered, Congress passed the Flag Act of 1818. This law returned the design to thirteen permanent stripes (to honor the original colonies) and decreed that a new star would be added for each new state on the July 4th following its admission.
