On this page is an assortment of Pictures of U.S.A. Flags taken from historic sheet music, posters, and banquet menus. The first “unofficial” flag was the Grand Union Flag (1775), which featured the British Union Jack in the canton (the top-left corner) and thirteen red and white stripes. It was used by the Continental Army before the formal declaration of independence. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act, establishing an official design for the new nation. While legend often credits Betsy Ross with sewing the first flag at George Washington’s request, most historians believe the design was actually created by Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. When you’re finished here, you should take a look at the galleries with more US Flag Pictures and Pictures for Memorial Day. Enjoy!
