Pictures of Julius Caesar

On this page are twelve Pictures of Julius Caesar in various scenes from his tumultuous life. Born in 100 BC, Caesar gained fame through his military conquests, particularly in Gaul, where he expanded Rome’s territory and built a loyal army. In 49 BC, the Roman Senate, influenced by Pompey the Great and his supporters, ordered Caesar to disband his army and return to Rome. Instead, Caesar crossed the Rubicon River with his army, effectively declaring war on the Senate and Pompey. This sparked a civil war. Pompey fled to Greece to gather forces, but Caesar pursued him and defeated him at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC.

Pompey fled to Egypt, hoping for refuge, but was betrayed and murdered by advisors to the young Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII, who hoped to win favor with Caesar. When Caesar arrived in Egypt and was presented with Pompey’s severed head, he was reportedly horrified and wept for his former ally and son-in-law. However, Pompey’s death removed Caesar’s main rival and allowed him to consolidate power, eventually becoming dictator for life.
