Images of Pompeii

In this gallery are twelve stunning Images of Pompeii with views of the House of Colored Capitals, the House of the Tragic Poet, the Basilica, and more. They come from the book The Houses and Monuments of Pompeii by Fausto and Felice Niccolini. Several volumes were published between 1854 and 1896. The goal of the Niccolini project was to visually document every aspect of life in Pompeii as revealed by the excavations. Their publication attempted to show the city not just as ruins but as a living Roman environment. Alongside each one is a vision of what the original area looked like before the destruction of the city with scenes reconstructing daily life in shops, workshops, taverns, and public spaces.
