Gaius Julius Caesar

Gaius Julius Caesar

In this gallery you’ll find eighteen black and white images of Gaius Julius Caesar. Caesar was a renowned Roman general, statesman, and dictator who played a critical role in the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. He rose to prominence through military success, most notably his conquest of Gaul (modern-day France), which made him immensely popular and wealthy. In 49 BC, he famously crossed the Rubicon River, sparking a civil war that ended with his victory over rival forces led by Pompey. As dictator, Caesar implemented significant reforms, but his growing power alarmed many senators. On March 15, 44 BC—the Ides of March—he was assassinated by a group of conspirators, including former allies like Brutus and Cassius. Caesar’s death marked the end of the Roman Republic and set the stage for the rise of the Roman Empire under his adopted heir, Octavian (Augustus).
