Bodies Of Pompeii

Bodies of Pompeii

In this gallery are ten compelling images of the iconic Bodies of Pompeii. They are from Houses and Monuments of Pompeii by Fausto and Felice Niccolini. The book included some of the earliest published illustrations of the plaster casts of victims from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. These casts were created beginning in 1863 by archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli, who poured plaster into cavities left in the hardened ash where human bodies had decomposed. The resulting casts preserved the victims’ final positions and sometimes even details of clothing and hair. The Niccolini book illustrated several of these casts in carefully rendered lithographs, helping to introduce the public to the human tragedy of Pompeii and providing one of the earliest visual records of this groundbreaking archaeological technique.
