Spider Drawings

Spider Drawings

Below are eighteen fascinating Spider Drawings done in color. They are from a book entitled The Arachnids: Faithfully Depicted and Described from Nature by Karl Ludiwg Koch and Carl Wilhelm Hahn. There were sixteen volumes published between 1831 and 1848. If you click on a thumbnail image, you’ll find the descriptions which accompanied the pictures in the text. I tried to find the common names, but apparently many of the names are no longer viewed as accurate. Most are described as being “mygale.” That is “a former genus of large, hairy trapdoor spiders with four lungs and four spinnerets, now refered to as Mygalomorphae. The Mygalomorphae, or mygalomorphs, are an infraorder of spiders, and comprise one of three major groups of living spiders with over 3,000 species, found on all continents except Antarctica” (Wikipedia). If you enjoy viewing these Spider Drawings, you might also like the pages with Weird Creatures or Silhouettes of Bats. Enjoy!
