On this page are illustrations of eighteen Artifacts from Pompeii. They come from two volumes of the book Pompeii written by William Clarke in 1832-33. Included are images of braziers, beehives make of bronze, ancient bolts, keys, and hinges, and much more. Treasures from Pompeii were unearthed through a long process that began with accidental discoveries by workers in the late 16th century. Formal, though initially unsystematic, excavations started in the mid-18th century, often involving tunneling to extract valuable objects for collectors.
