Aztec Symbolism 14
Xoloti, (Xolotl) on the right, was a god of fire and lightning. He was commonly depicted as a dog-headed man and was a soul-guide for the dead. He was also god of twins, monsters, misfortune, sickness, and deformities. Facing him is Tlalchitonatiuh, a deity associated with the setting sun, when the stars start to appear in the night sky. The sun is entering the jaws of earth. Around them is cemanauatl, the complete ring, the world encompassed by water.
