There are a lot of great places to find copyright and royalty free images to use in your art work. The following list of web sites offer images which are in the public domain and/or royalty free or copyright free. But don’t just take my word for it. Be sure to read each web site’s policy on usage of the images on its site.

  • Imagebase ~ A collection of photos that can be freely used for personal, commercial, non-profit, artistic, or creative purposes. Very nice nature images.
  • MagazineArt ~ More than fifteen thousand magazine covers and ads from the Golden Age of American illustration. Not all of these are in the public domain.
  • CopyrightFreePhotos ~ A small collection of free high quality photos in 12 galleries.
  • Art-e-Zine ~ Not sure if the site is active, but you can still find lovely vintage images of of children and ladies.
  • Civil War Images ~ About 7,000 different views and portraits made during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and its immediate aftermath.
  • Mayang’s Free Textures ~ Over 4350 free to download, high-resolution textures and images. Be sure to read the terms of use.
  • The Camelot Project: Artists and Images ~ Hundreds of beautiful illustrations from various books relating to the many tales of Avalon and Camelot.
  • Curtis’s Botanical Magazine ~ Lovely book plates of flowers brought to you by the USDA, of all places.
  • Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library ~ You can search by topic a vast collection of digitized images. The nice thing about these materials is they are well cited, so you can see what copyright restrictions, if any, may apply.
  • MorgueFile ~ High resolution stock photos for illustration, comp, or design needs. An incredible array of beautiful images.
