Reliquary :: Theresa's Cross

A vintage image of a blue-eyed nun is the centerpiece of this small reliquary. Glittering rhinestones and blue rox surround her. Columns are wrapped with gold paper and blue satin ribbon. Vintage sapphire arrowhead stones shine upon her.

In a thrift store, buried inside a bag of discarded junk jewelry is a small white box. I shake it expecting silence, but instead hear a tiny rattle. I look inside and find sandwiched between squares of cotton the gold painted cross with the mottled blue stones. A torn slip of paper underneath has the the words "To Theresa" written faintly in pencil. This is her reliquary.

The cross is stitched to cornflower blue velveteen paper and set apart from the Italian gold leafed paper by a gold woven trim and vintage square sapphire rhinestones.

The outside of the reliquary is wrapped with velvet embossed paper and sheer blue ribbon. A gold painted and glittered filagree adorns the ribbon along with a golden button which holds a deep blue glass pebble.

ABOUT THE RELIQUARIES :: Each Reliquary is individually hand-crafted by altering a children's board. These unique altered books are cut, carved, painted, covered with paper, and embellished to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art in which to hold a special relic or artifact. The Reliquaries are perfect for displaying on a coffee table, book shelf, night stand, or display case, and they make wonderful gifts.

Please visit my gallery of Reliquaries to see my other Christian pieces and to learn more about the history of reliquaries.

In addition, if you enjoyed this altered book, I invite you to view my Wall Hangings Gallery -- wall decor in the form of book sculptures -- as well as my Christian Art Collages.
